9am Lectures Will Be The Death Of Me (Day 50)

(Being yesterday:)
FEBRUARY 21, 2010

Wow, 50 days here already. And yet another boring 9am Operating Systems lecture. What a horrible topic for an early class - we just stare at code on Powerpoint slides for three hours. Yikes.

After surviving that, I went to Iceland to restock on some essentials: soap, laundry detergent, chips, chicken, rice, milk. All for around £6. Solid. Came back, put in some laundry, and ate lunch. Since I got so ahead on work over the weekend, I really didn't have much to do.. Cleaned a little bit, worked on the blog/watched Lost, handed in my programming assignment, made sure I didn't have anything else due. When I couldn't think of anything else to do, I started cruising for new music - came up with some real good stuff too. Some new favorites:

Angus & Julia Stone - "Big Jet Plane", off their amazing album "Down The Way"
One of my new favorite songs. Their an Australian brother-sister indie/folk/blues duo. Just amazing stuff, really. Love their voices - just a different sound that blends so well.

Horse Feathers - "Thistled Spring", off their album of the same name
A real solid indie/folk group from Portland with a great, chill sound. Love it.

River City Extension - "Something Salty, Something Sweet, off their album "The Unmistakable Man"
A random find, but they've got a good alt-pop/folk sound. This song in particular is just so catchy, with some great instrumentals and writing

Okkervil River - "Unless It's Kicks", off their album "The Stage Names"
A Texas-based indie rock band with a good sound. Great stuff.

I found a ton more, but those were the albums I got. Just added the others to a growing list of needed albums.. gotta get on that eventually.. On a similar note, Bright Eyes, Iron & Wine, and Radiohead all have new albums. Looking forward to them.

Yesterday evening, a couple of us were invited to dinner at an Indian restaurant called 'Chowki' by a friend's visiting parents. It's near Piccadilly circus, so I braved the light drizzle and walked:

Trafalgar Square, beautiful at night

The National Gallery

'Her Majesty's Theatre'

Piccadilly Square

More Piccadilly!

.. and more!

From Piccadilly - Trafalgar and Parliament in the distance.

Lillywhites, a HUGE sports store, and where I bought an Arsenal jersey last time I was in London.

No idea what this place is, but it's huge

Cool little thing between Piccadilly and Leicester

Yup. A random TGI Fridays in London.

Les Miserables!

Chowki, the indian restaurant! Great stuff

The food! Some VERY delicious Madras Chicken Curry: spicy chicken in a tomato/onion gravy with coconut, poppy seeds, and curry leaves. PLUS dal (a sort of bean-based soup-like substance great for dipping pieces of nan bread in!) AND a slightly spicy rice with beans and veggies. Delicious.

Grabbed a couple donuts from a nearby bakery for the walk home, just to treat myself. Came back, grabbed a couple leftover beers from my fridge and went to a friend's place to watch a couple episode of 30 Rock. Eventually came back to my place and caught about half of the Pens game - they lost 1-0 to the Caps, but it was a good game. Still struggling to produce consistent offense with the huge deficit in our roster; so many injuries.. Big trade news though - Goligoski to Dallas for James Neal and Matt Niskanen. Great move by Shero to get rid of a good but inconsistent defenseman and bring on a powerful winger for Sid (or just some offensive help in these rough times) and a decent defenseman. We'll see what happens, but I think it's a good call.

No class until 5pm tomorrow, so sleeping in late.. night..

Good music to walk London to:
Angus & Julia Stone - "Yellow Brick Road", from the same album as above
Another great track from the Australian duo. Loving them right now.

A pretty chill night so I thought I thought I'd throw up a quick update.
Cheers!
